The Importance of Medium-Term Accommodation

Medium-Term Accommodation for NDIS participants is a support that NDIS provides if and when you need extra help to stay in a temporary accommodation for up to 90 days while you wait for your permanent home. It only exists to help cover accommodation costs and is temporary while we assist you with finding a permanent solution after your medium-term stay ends.

This can be especially important for participants who are otherwise left stranded in hospital beds, residential aged care or other high-risk non-crisis places while waiting to move into a new home. If you’re eligible, you could be better supported by MTA NDIS solutions that are more appropriate.

You should note that unlike short-term accommodation, NDIS Medium-Term Accommodation in Melbourne covers the cost of your temporary accommodation ONLY. It doesn’t include personal care, food or other supports you may need. If you require additional supports that your NDIS funding covers, we can work with you to promptly arrange them.

Eligibility for Opting into the MTA NDIS

Not everyone on the NDIS is necessarily eligible for MTA. In order to gain funding for Medium-Term Accommodation from the NDIS, participants must meet three eligibility criteria. This includes:

  • You have a long-term permanent home you will move into after your Medium-Term Accommodation ends.

  • You can’t move into your long-term permanent home yet because your disability supports aren’t ready, necessitating a temporary alternative to ensure you have a roof over your head.

  • You can’t stay in your current accommodation while you wait for your long-term permanent home, or you currently don’t have a place to stay.
